Chronic Kidney Disease Stages

Understanding your GFR result and what it means for kidney health.

Stage GFR Range (mL/min/1.73m²) Description Management
1 ≥ 90 Normal or high GFR with kidney damage Treat underlying cause, control blood pressure
2 60-89 Mildly decreased GFR with kidney damage Estimate progression, manage risk factors
3a 45-59 Mild to moderate decrease in GFR Evaluate and manage complications
3b 30-44 Moderate to severe decrease in GFR Prepare for possible renal replacement
4 15-29 Severely decreased GFR Prepare for renal replacement therapy
5 < 15 Kidney failure Dialysis or transplant needed

Understanding Your GFR Results

What is GFR?

Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is a measure of how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood. It's considered the best overall indicator of kidney function. GFR is typically reported in milliliters per minute per 1.73 square meters (mL/min/1.73m²).

How to Use This Calculator

Our GFR calculator provides an estimated GFR (eGFR) based on the information you provide. For accurate results:

  • Enter your age in years
  • Select your biological gender
  • Provide your most recent serum creatinine level
  • Select your race/ethnicity as this can affect the calculation
  • Optionally, provide weight and height for additional calculation methods

After submitting the form, your eGFR will be calculated and displayed along with an interpretation of your kidney function.

Limitations of eGFR

While eGFR is a valuable screening tool, it has limitations:

  • Not accurate for individuals with unusual muscle mass (athletes, amputees)
  • Less reliable in elderly patients
  • May be inaccurate during acute illness
  • Not validated for all ethnic groups

Always consult with a healthcare provider for proper interpretation of your kidney function tests.

When to See a Doctor

You should consult a healthcare provider if:

  • Your eGFR is below 60 mL/min/1.73m²
  • You have a rapid decline in eGFR over time
  • You have symptoms of kidney disease such as swelling, fatigue, or changes in urination
  • You have risk factors for kidney disease including diabetes, hypertension, or family history
